Volumi vs Splitwise: an honest look for trip crews
Splitwise is where most people start, and for a lot of splits it's genuinely all you need. My own crew ran on it for years. What follows is the honest account of why we eventually drifted off, written for the one case Splitwise wasn't really built for: a group trip with more than one currency where the money gets genuinely tangled.
What Splitwise gets right.
Even splits, a huge user base (odds are your friends already have it), a clean way to log a shared tab. For a dinner with two friends in one currency, it's quick and it works. Credit where it's due.
Where it started getting in our way.
The app got heavier than the job. This is the honest one. Over the years Splitwise grew into more taps, more screens, and more things sitting between us and a simple "who owes who." For our trips it slowly stopped feeling quick, simple to use, intuitive. Said kindly, it grew in a direction that stopped matching how we actually need to split trips.
Basic things moved behind Pro. Features that felt like easy grabs or table stakes started living behind the paywall. No transfer simplify? No multi-currency? Fair business calls, but they just weren't the solve we needed for a group of friends splitting international trips quickly and easily.
One trip, two currencies. Paying for the taxi in yen and dinner in euros on the same day, and trusting the number that comes out the other end. The friction of tracking individual balances ("who do I owe in what currency") was cumbersome there, and there was no easy solution. We even had to make a spreadsheet matrix to compute who owed who exactly what and reduce the transfers at one point!
Signal? Problem Half of our good trips happened on hostel wifi or dead SIMs. When we wanted to log the taxi now, we often had to record it by hand somewhere to wait until we were back on signal to then put it into the app.
Settle in the fewest transfers. ... did we mention this yet? Six (or twenty) people and a week (or month) of expenses very often turned into a messy tangle of payments. We really wanted two or three transfers to clear the whole thing, no matter how many currencies, without it being too much of a monetization point.
How Volumi handles it.
Log every expense in the currency it was actually paid in, and Volumi does the conversion so nobody argues about rates. It computes the fewest transfers to get everyone square. It works offline and syncs later. The core loop is free and stays free. You can even track people who refuse to install anything, then nudge them to join when it's time to pay up.
The honest bottom line.
If you're splitting small trips and a few dinners with a few friends in one currency, Splitwise is good at that, feel free to keep it. But if your last trip looked like the group chat on our home page, or sounds like the scenarios we painted above (they really happened), then that's the exact mess we built Volumi for.
